Sura 6 Al-An'am (The Cattle), ayah 42

  1. وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ أُمَمٍ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

    Translation by words

    وَلَقَدْ
    And certainly
    أَرْسَلْنَآ
    We sent (Messengers)
    إِلَىٰٓ
    to
    أُمَمٍ
    nations
    مِّن
    from
    قَبْلِكَ
    before you,
    فَأَخَذْنَٰهُم
    then We seized them
    بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ
    with adversity
    وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ
    and hardship
    لَعَلَّهُمْ
    so that they may
    يَتَضَرَّعُونَ
    humble themselves.

    And We have already sent (messengers) to nations before you, (O Muhammad); then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves (to Us).
