Sura 24 An-Nur (The Light), ayah 16

  1. وَلَوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُمْ مَا يَكُونُ لَنَا أَنْ نَتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا سُبْحَانَكَ هَٰذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيمٌ

    Translation by words

    وَلَوْلَآ
    And why not,
    إِذْ
    when
    سَمِعْتُمُوهُ
    you heard it,
    قُلْتُم
    you said,
    مَّا
    "Not
    يَكُونُ
    it is
    لَنَآ
    for us
    أَن
    that
    نَّتَكَلَّمَ
    we speak
    بِهَٰذَا
    of this.
    سُبْحَٰنَكَ
    Glory be to You!
    هَٰذَا
    This
    بُهْتَٰنٌ
    (is) a slander
    عَظِيمٌ
    great?"

    And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, (O Allah); this is a great slander"?
