Sura 5 Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread), ayah 108

  1. ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتُوا بِالشَّهَادَةِ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهَا أَوْ يَخَافُوا أَنْ تُرَدَّ أَيْمَانٌ بَعْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ ۗ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَاسْمَعُوا ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

    Translation by words

    ذَٰلِكَ
    That
    أَدْنَىٰٓ
    (is) closer
    أَن
    that
    يَأْتُوا۟
    they will give
    بِٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ
    the testimony
    عَلَىٰ
    in
    وَجْهِهَآ
    its (true) form
    أَوْ
    or
    يَخَافُوٓا۟
    they would fear
    أَن
    that
    تُرَدَّ
    will be refuted
    أَيْمَٰنٌۢ
    their oaths
    بَعْدَ
    after
    أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ
    their (others) oaths.
    وَٱتَّقُوا۟
    And fear
    ٱللَّهَ
    Allah
    وَٱسْمَعُوا۟
    and listen;
    وَٱللَّهُ
    and Allah
    لَا
    (does) not
    يَهْدِى
    guide
    ٱلْقَوْمَ
    the people.
    ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ
    the defiantly disobedient.

    That is more likely that they will give testimony according to its (true) objective, or (at least) they would fear that (other) oaths might be taken after their oaths. And fear Allah and listen; and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

    5:108
