Sura 25 Al-Furqan (The Criterion), ayah 18

  1. قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنْبَغِي لَنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ مِنْ دُونِكَ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ وَلَٰكِنْ مَتَّعْتَهُمْ وَآبَاءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَسُوا الذِّكْرَ وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا بُورًا

    Translation by words

    قَالُوا۟
    They say,
    سُبْحَٰنَكَ
    "Glory be to You!
    مَا
    Not
    كَانَ
    it was proper
    يَنۢبَغِى
    it was proper
    لَنَآ
    for us
    أَن
    that
    نَّتَّخِذَ
    we take
    مِن
    besides You
    دُونِكَ
    besides You
    مِنْ
    any
    أَوْلِيَآءَ
    protectors.
    وَلَٰكِن
    But
    مَّتَّعْتَهُمْ
    You gave them comforts
    وَءَابَآءَهُمْ
    and their forefathers
    حَتَّىٰ
    until
    نَسُوا۟
    they forgot
    ٱلذِّكْرَ
    the Message
    وَكَانُوا۟
    and became
    قَوْمًۢا
    a people
    بُورًا
    ruined."

    They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."
