Sura 5 Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread), ayah 43

  1. وَكَيْفَ يُحَكِّمُونَكَ وَعِنْدَهُمُ التَّوْرَاةُ فِيهَا حُكْمُ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّوْنَ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَمَا أُولَٰئِكَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ

    Translation by words

    وَكَيْفَ
    But how can
    يُحَكِّمُونَكَ
    they appoint you a judge
    وَعِندَهُمُ
    while they (have) with them
    ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ
    the Taurat,
    فِيهَا
    in it
    حُكْمُ
    (is the) Command
    ٱللَّهِ
    (of) Allah?
    ثُمَّ
    Then
    يَتَوَلَّوْنَ
    they turn away
    مِنۢ
    from
    بَعْدِ
    after
    ذَٰلِكَ
    that,
    وَمَآ
    and not
    أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
    those
    بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
    (are) the believers.

    But how is it that they come to you for judgement while they have the Torah, in which is the judgement of Allah? Then they turn away, (even) after that; but those are not (in fact) believers.
